The country life is to preferred, for there we see the works of God, but in cities little else but the works of men. and the one makes a better subject for contemplation than the other – William Penn

St. Lucia Coast, elephant Coast

Discover the magic of fishing in one of Africa’s premier destinations – St. Lucia. Nestled at the heart of the world-renowned iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly the St. Lucia Estuary and Wetlands Park), this UNESCO World Heritage Site stretches from Kosi Bay in the north to Cape St. Lucia in the south, on the breathtaking Elephant Coast.

With parts of this area designated as a game reserve since 1895, it’s no wonder that iSimangaliso ranks high on every avid traveler’s ‘must-visit’ list. The quaint town of St. Lucia, once a sleepy hollow beneath a canopy of trees, has transformed into a vibrant tourist hub, perfectly poised to cater to eco-tourism with an array of accommodation options, restaurants, supermarkets, and other facilities that make your stay seamless and delightful.

Step into a world of freshwater pans, lakes, mangrove and reed swamps, marshy grasslands, coastal dunes, and abundant wildlife. St. Lucia is a serene oasis where life moves at a peaceful pace, as evidenced by the monkeys and little duikers that roam freely in its streets. This charming town is an ideal stopover en-route to the more remote reaches of the Elephant Coast. For anglers, St. Lucia is paradise itself – a plethora of seafood restaurants and well-stocked bait and tackle shops testify to its popularity.

When you speak of St. Lucia, you’re really referring to the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, South Africa’s third-largest park. This wilderness reserve covers some 280 km of coastline, stretching from Kozi Bay in the north to Cape St. Lucia in the south. It was the first park in South Africa to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.

The park includes Lake St. Lucia and its estuary, a surrounding wildlife reserve, several islands, and a section of the Marine Reserve along the coast. Home to five distinct ecosystems, the park features swamps, lake systems, coral reefs, beaches, wetlands, woodlands, and coastal forests.

The Great St. Lucia Wetland Park boasts South Africa’s largest population of hippos and crocodiles, and is also home to leatherback turtles, black rhinos, leopards, and over 530 species of birds, including greater and lesser flamingos, as well as 36 species of amphibians. This park supports more wildlife species than the larger and more well-known Kruger National Park. The unique blend of subtropical coastline and African game park is what draws visitors, offering sheer viewing pleasure in one of the most beautiful spots on earth.

During November, sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, and from June through September, whales migrate through its waters. St. Lucia is a very popular fishing destination, offering surf fishing, kite fishing, fly fishing, spear fishing, and deep-sea fishing. Numerous hiking trails wind through the park, with some adventures spanning several days.

The activities in this area are limitless. Enjoy hippo cruises, kayak safaris, game drives, and the stunning beaches with their high sand dunes, perfect for walks, volleyball, and sunbathing. St. Lucia, at the southern entrance to the park and about 300 km from Durban, beckons with its extraordinary blend of nature, adventure, and tranquility.
